well, well, well |3|

schoolcI am sure these will bring back memories for many. These are ink wells from old school desks. A little before my time of course! They are housed in small rimu wood blocks. Am not sure if this is how they were originally or if the rimu blocks are a later addition to extend their useful life.

These are a little different from the rest of my ink well collection – but I felt they would be a nice piece of nostalgia to have in the shop. It is nice to have such pieces dotted about the shop – many an interesting conversation has started around these items.

on the desk in … |3| yellow

I think if you asked any retailer they would tell you that yellow is not generally a colour that sells well. Certain items we have in yellow are quite popular however. The yellow Lamy Safari pens and mechanical pencils fly out the door. They are a shade of yellow much like a Ferrari – perhaps that’s the appeal! Yellow tags and matching Divine Twine are also regularly purchased.

Van Gogh said, “How wonderful yellow is. It stands for the sun.” Let’s hope this brings the sun out.

to the letter |3| C

Devonport signs don’t appear to have many interesting Cs and it was a horrible rainy morning when we went on our search. Here’s what we found. Shop dog was not too happy about the outing either – he does not really like the rain!

xmastreeWe are counting down the days until Christmas!

We’ve got two gorgeous white Christmas trees outside the shop – complete with hand made red paper decorations and a count down on the top to remind shoppers how many days they have left to get their Christmas shopping done. Only 23 from today!

Many people have stopped to admire the trees. I know they are not the traditional green but the white is rather eye catching and nice for a change and I have long admired white trees. They make a great back drop for coloured decorations.

I love this time of year – the shopping buzz, the anticipation of some time off work to spend with family and friends and the hope of some lovely weather!

new to my pencil case / desk |2|

mickeycWhilst having a bit of a tidy up in my workroom the other day I came across my first ever fountain pen. It was a gift to me from a friend whilst we were at university. I am not sure who made it – there is no logo on it apart from a Mickey Mouse one! But don’t let that fool you – this is a nice solid metal pen with a two-tone iridium nib from Germany, which has a nice bit of flex to it and it came complete with it’s own pouch. From memory it was purchased at Smith & Caughey here in Auckland.

Obviously after years and years of no use it took a couple of attempts to get the ink flowing again. I first tried just holding the nib section under running water and initially that seemed to have worked, but then when left over night the ink flow was a bit patchy again. So I soaked the nib section in Higgins pen cleaning solution and viola we are back in action.

I assume the main reason I stopped using it was that at the time I didn’t know where to buy replacement cartridges from. I was not as knowledgeable in such things as I am now! It takes the “international” cartridge that we stock form J. Herbin. Problem solved. I shall never be without ink again.

Rather than adding it to my pencil case though I think I may, in light of the fact that it has it’s own pouch, have this as my handbag pen.

As I understand the frustration of not being able to find ink cartridges for your pen, we are attempting to stock most fountain pen ink cartridges in store. Currently we have J.Herbin international/universal, Lamy, Parker, Waterman and soon we will have Cross. If we can be of any assistance in finding the correct cartridges for your pen please don’t hesitate to contact us.

splendidTwo of my favourite things. The colour red and a typewriter. This has to be one of the favourites of my little collection – as much for the colour if nothing else!

This one is an Olympia Splendid 99. Made during the 1960s this cute little portable was one of the original Splendid models. Plastic models followed later which were apparently not a patch on this robust number which is off metal construction.

I am greeted each morning by this one as I make my way downstairs in our house as it on display on a table at the end of the upstairs hallway. It always makes me smile!

well formed |2| B

I must say that forming the letter B is rather satisfying. It seems to have a nice combination of strokes. It is interesting to see favourites developing – and they are not necessarily your own letters as you may have thought/wished. Funnily enough both K & S were and still are a bit of a challenge for me! Oh well, as they say, practise makes perfect – so I’ll keep on keeping on!

hot off the press |2|

christmascChristmas is one of my favourite times of year. I love to decorate both my house and the shop, and the buzz of Christmas shopping is always fun. In saying that I don’t like to decorate the shop too early as some shops do – around November 25 seems right to me.

Hot off the press – well the printer in this case – are this years Christmas cards. We have been fortunate enough to have had some gorgeous watercolour images commissioned for a range of cards and gift tags this year. I have long been a fan of water colour illustrations so am absolutely delighted to be offering this range.

well equipped |2| letterpress type

typecWith the advent of larger and faster offset printing machines letterpress printing was pushed aside in favour of this newer,  easier way to print. Consequently a lot of the machinery and accessories used for letterpress printing were put in to storage and then eventually disposed of. Trying to buy letterpress equipment now in New Zealand is relatively difficult. Much of the lead type has been thrown out or melted down. In saying that, the self confessed collector that I am, I am the proud owner of 84 trays of letterpress type! Yes 84! Just as well our shop in The old Post Office Building has the old vault in it which is a fantastic storage area for all of my printing paraphernalia.
